New research reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People buying such drugs need to be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically have a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
People who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly starving," recalled one woman.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
