Consider this a dare for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but inside Together lies a deep examination about how we choose to love one another.
A Directorial Debut Exploring Partnership Complexities
Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for a decade. Married in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.
The narrative begins when Millie and Tim transition from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two discover an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity begins influencing the couple. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.
The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) physical transformations, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.
Complex Characterizations
A significant portion of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.
Conversely, Tim feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his social circle. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.
The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting either of his characters the definite antagonist.
Both characters face the sort of issues that come with long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their relationship.
Thematic Depth
While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and fully committing to another person, the allegory never feels overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other symbiotically.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.
Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform at present.
